Spiral Studio

Spiral Studio

Spiral Studio stands for continuous revelation of contemporaneous arts. Its conceptional response is the result of the organisational work of Wbmotion e.V. (registered association) carried out during the creation of artistic productions in the city and the region with direct contact to a regular audience.

Spiral Studio provides local cultural enrichment through its established international bridges that will be accentuated by internationally curated exhibitions.

This project will revitalize the center of Lutherstadt Wittenberg, while occupying different locations that have long been closed.

The main program encompasses an offer of exhibitions of contemporaneous arts, primarily in the areas of new media, performance, dance and installation. The focus lies with disciplines that are still the least seen in Lutherstadt Wittenberg and the region. Spiral Studio wants to feature mainly host groups and artistic collaborative work. It is intended to exhibit a vast range of the medium primarily by international young talents.

17:45 - 00:30

The videos contain a documentary character regarding the works of several visual artists and performers, who were invited to create a short monologue as a preparation for the Feinprobe Honigsüss 6 artistic residence, taken place in Wittenberg, August 2013.
This exercise had the site-specific character regarding a place defined by the artists in their home-towns. Each production received the background research on a cultural rite still in memory at the locality of the artist’s origin. A ritual is a powerful tool when it gracefully synthetizes complex communication messages and insures the longevity of the message’s importance. A ritual is envisioned as non-steady, mutant, and it should absorb new challenges to the demanding new situation.

Each artist contemplated independently to embed the own work on a growing memento which translates a work-in-progress mind state towards overcoming Ego. Conceptually, at least 1 of 3 modalities of awakening doing was to be included: ACCEPTANCE, ENJOYMENT, and ENTHUSIASM. These important variables were taken into consideration for the research and production process each one had undertaken. While being referred to as “awakening doing”, the research process took a preponderant paper to be observed on the “Overcoming Ego” theme.

“Ego / Land Spiritual Gardening”   06’05”min

Synopsis:
“The video performance Ego / Land Spiritual Gardening is based on Slavic pagan rituals which were supposed to ensure the fertility of the land and consequently a better future. It‘s burial, offering, prayer and forecast at the same time. The can of meat symbolizes something what used to be alive, and currently it‘s just food or an object. The Artist buries the food / can as an offering to the earth. An old text from Czech historian, poet and writer of the mid-19th century Karel Jaromir Erben illustrates the whole performance: „I came out to the world from the ground. It‘s the land where I found my mind. Still walking like a man.
I will be buried back in the ground again.“ We all want a good future. Our ancestors prayed for the same thing. They knew how fragile human life is and were aware of its temporality. This feeling of acceptance could be the opportunity to look through the illusion of time and to experience our past and future at the present moment, the opportunity to live our lives with enthusiasm and enjoyment.
Jindřich Max Pavlíček 15 / 9 / 13

\\\   A fresh student at Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts, Olbram Pavlíček is building up his career at a tender age with a maturity of one kind. One might observe the influence of his brother’s presence in the work, Jindrich, although Olbram heads his repertoire through animation and conceptual art. His presence in Wittenberg was marked by direct collaborations with contemporaneous dancers regarding live video manipulation.

“Territory”   01’52”min

Synopsis:
Through some magic word spelling, a Great Person carrying a sack of hailstones was called by people to take away destruction from their plantation fields and defend their lands. No one knows the name of that person. The moaning of the wind before the storm is said to be the sigh of a tired man who can´t take this load anymore.
In this context, storm clouds are explained as souls of small children who hadn´t been baptized and brutally killed people. That´s why when an exorcist spelled against storm clouds, tears of blood fell from the skies onto his book of exorcisms.
Carrying a significant burden from the river and dropping it somewhere elsewhere instead of causing prejudice is in some way like overcoming ego. When accomplished from own initiative, it enriches personal experience. For others it can be taken as a useless activity, even an absurd activity…
This performance comprehends acceptance and being in harmony with the environment while finding a way to survive.
